Android 4.4 KitKat leak shows tweaked but familiar Android interface

Will Google announce KitKat and the Nexus 5 next week? Maybe. Is the latest leak enough to hold you over? Probably not, but here it is anyway. This is purported to be Android 4.4 running on the upcoming Nexus 5, and if it seems to look a lot like Jelly Bean, that’s because it does.

There are a few tweaks: a transparent notification bar, a tweaked app drawer showing five rows of four apps each over your phone’s background instead of black, and the ability to access Google Now by swiping left past the leftmost home screen. The Nexus 5 also reportedly features the same “OK, Google Now” voice commands as the Moto X.

There are likely to be plenty of other changes — some on the surface, some under it — that will be revealed when Google unveils the latest update.  It’s Android 4.4 version number, however, seems to be more and more fitting. Despite getting a new codename with KitKat, the build will share a lot in common with Jelly Bean.

Rumors point to Google unveiling KitKat and the Nexus 5 next week, possibly on October 15th. Keep it tuned here for all of the latest developments.

Greed for Glory: War Strategy for Android Review

Greed for Glory: War Strategy enters the freemium field with exciting but strangely run-of-the-mill gameplay. It's similar to titles like Battle Dragons and Clash of Clans: the only real difference being a new setting and art style. But despite lacking any sort of innovation, PerBlue's medieval-themed building/combat sim will keep you strangely captivated for weeks on end. Just go easy on the diamonds, okay?

Greed for Glory puts you at the helm of a small village looking to become more than a collection of wooden huts. Build new structures as you mine iron and gold, collecting as much currency as you can so you can raise a massive army of archers, knights, and wizards. With all of those trained soldiers milling around, might as well head out and attack nearby villages, right? Increase your fame (and your loot) by sacking other towns, slowly expanding and upgrading your base to accommodate your newfound power and glory.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD refresh sports new look, same specs

Amazon has just unleashed two new Android tablets to add to its Kindle Fire HD line, so it’s kind of expected that all eyes would be on the new Kindle Fire HDX devices. But if the high specs and relatively higher prices aren’t your kind of thing, then maybe Amazon’s second take on the Kindle Fire HD might make you feel less left out.

The Kindle Fire HD, itself an evolution of the original Kindle Fire, is already a year old. Everyone has been expecting Amazon to bring out new tablets, which it did today, but it seems that the retailer giant has other plans for the old 7-inch device. Instead of completely replacing it with the new Kindle Fire HDX 7, Amazon has decided to instead repackage the original Kindle Fire HD with a new look, both inside and outside.

T-Mobile Moto X getting software update to improve camera quality

The Moto X is an excellent phone, but if there is was anything holding it back, it’s the camera quality. The perception from myself and many other reviewers is that it’s a software issue, and it looks like we were right. An update is now ready to roll and T-Mobile’s Moto X is going to be the first to get it. The changelog is as follows:

Designing a custom Moto X with a 4-year old using Motomaker

Most of the tech bloggers were given an opportunity yesterday to customize a Moto X using a Beta version of Motomaker. We already did a thorough hands on at the Motorola event a couple of weeks ago so I didn’t take this opportunity to give you another boring hands on. I decided to bring my 4-year old son along for the ride and let him customize it the way he wanted. This video isn’t going to be as professional as my other videos, but it is an example of someone diving right in without playing with it for an hour before turning on the camera. We just opened the site, went through our selections, and order it. We didn’t get into the engravings or the wallpapers, but you can see more about that stuff in our previous hands on.

Motorola Skip for Moto X formally announced, includes three Skip Dots and is free with custom Moto X purchases

Last night, a new accessory for the Moto X called Motorola Skip showed up and vanished just as quickly. We already had an idea that it was designed to clip to your pants to unlock your Moto X easier, at least for those that use a security PIN or pattern lock. This is the case, but Motorola just formally introduced it and gave us a little more information.

If you remember, back in May at D11, Regina Dugan showed off some futuristic ways people will be able to use to authenticate their devices. The Motorola Skip isn’t that futuristic, but it is an example of some of the early progress that Motorola is making. Even though it is something that every smartphone/tablet owner should do, often times people don’t set a security lock screen since it’s such a pain to unlock the device just to read a quick email. Motorola Skip was designed to allow Moto X owners to implement this security, but still be able to unlock their device with ease.

Play Store Team Acknowledges Pervasive Package File Invalid Error When Installing Or Updating Apps, No Fix Yet

Update: The issue (#10230007) has been marked as resolved by the Play Store team. Apps should install and update fine now.

For the last week or so, a great number of Android users have become increasingly frustrated with frequent "Package file is invalid" errors when updating or installing apps. A variety of supposed fixes have been put forward by the community, but have proven to be merely placebos. Now Google has confirmed there is an issue. So no, it's not just you.

[New Game] Double Fine's Middle Manager Of Justice Hits Google Play, Saves The World One TPS Report At A Time

Superheroes are good at fighting evil directly and getting the girl, but have you ever thought about the valuable and experienced support staff behind the hero? Of course you haven't, because a good middle manager is invisible – like a ghost loaded down with busy work. In Double Fine's Middle Manager of Justice, you can build and manage a team of superheroes to save the world in a roundabout way.

The game invites you to hire heroes and keep them busy around the office to increase their skills. When the time comes to do battle with the forces of evil, you direct the action. Your base of operations (read: the office) can be customized to make your team the best it can be.

Middle Manager of Justice features cool animated art visuals and a wacky sense of humor. It's optimized for Tegra devices (and includes some extra content), but should run on any Android device. It is free to download, but there are in-app purchases.

How to use VPN on Android

VPN services

You can also subscribe to VPN services that will allow you to browse securely and/or anonymously through public Wi-Fi hotspots from your phone for a monthly fee. You can even get an IP address that’s out of a different country, so that you can access online TV services and other services that are restricted to users from that particular area.

Built-in Android VPN client

Android phones generally include a built-in VPN client, which you’ll find in the Settings | Wireless & networks menu. It’s labeled VPN settings: Set up and manage Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), as shown in Figure 1. The phone used for the screenshots is an HTC Thunderbolt running Android 2.2.1 (Froyo). However, Android has included VPN support since version 1.6 (Donut).

Fast and Furious 6 for Android Free Download

If you've watched television, browsed the Internet, seen any movies, used the highway or mass transit, or generally made any attempt to leave your house in the last two weeks, you know that the Fast & Furious film series has come 'round for another entry. Naturally that means a new line of toys, games, and licensed fuzzy dice, but only the Android version of the game has garnered our attention. Fast & Furious 6 is available as a free download for devices running Gingerbread or higher.

Naturally, the game focuses on the drag-style racing and over-the-top stunts seen in the movies. Licensed vehicles are up for grabs, including the iconic models and supercars shown off in the movie trailers, and cars can be upgraded and customized inside and out. Gameplay itself is split into standard street racing and "heist mode," wherein you'll have to achieve specific moves and stunts to take in your less than legal earnings.

Fast & Furious 6 features the standard free-to-play model: two types of in-app currency, one nigh-useless credit that you get for playing and winning, and another crazy overpowered credit that's so rare it can only reliably be had with real money. But that's not the oddest thing about the game. No, the strange thing is that there's no actual driving. A series of buttons and sliders let you choose when to launch, shift, activate nitrous oxide, drift, and perform stunts, but the game itself handles the steering (or lack thereof), gas, brake, and everything else.

It's a novel way to tackle the issue of poor on-screen controls. It's sort of the driving equivalent of the Infinity Blade/Blood and Glory "fighting" genre. But those who want a little, you know, racing in their racing game might want to look elsewhere.

Carmageddon for Android APK

Mark your calendars - Carmageddon will appear on Google Play next Friday, May 10th. The fine developers working on this decade-old port have announced that the game will be available free for the first 24 hours. If you need help remembering, they've offered to send you an email reminder. How nice.

Carmageddon first debuted in 1997 for Windows and Macintosh computers. It has since been ported to the original Playstation, the Nintendo 64, and the Game Boy Color. A modern port appeared on iOS in October of last year, but the Android port remained MIA. That's no longer the case.

The game features 11 environments, 36 levels, and 30 playable cars. If you do choose to sign-up at Carmageddon.com before release day, you will be entered into a contest to win a free t-shirt and a free copy of Carmageddon on GOG.

Note: Considering free apps can't turn paid in the Play Store, we've reached out to the Carmageddon team to figure out what their plans were in that department. Their response was:
Sure, the free version will be removed after 24 hours and the Paid for version will be released. The same game but different apps. The  guys are determined to get a free version out, in line with their Kickstarter campaign, so this is a nice solution.

Since removed apps still show up for users who have already downloaded them, it may be an acceptable solution, as long as the removed free version and the paid version will receive the same updates. We have our doubts, but we've reached out for more info yet again.

Now Playing for Android APK Download

Google Now is an Android app designed to deliver information to you when you need it, from traffic or weather reports to appointments, sports scores, or flight information. It’s also one of the best looking apps for Android, thanks to its simple, understated design.

If you’ve been wondering why there aren’t more apps that follow that pattern, well, now there’s at least one more. Now Playing is a new music player which borrows heavily from Google Now for its look and feel.

Now Playing is still beta software, but it looks great and works almost as well. You can grab the latest beta from developer Jack Underwood.

He drew inspiration from the project from a reddit post with some concept art for a similar music player. But Now Playing beta is more than just some pretty artwork featuring lots of white space and a card-style theme.

The app also automatically downloads artwork for artists in your collection, grabs song lyrics, and automatically generates playlists for Favorites and Last added. You can also add tracks to a playlist or queue by long-pressing, or use a song as a ringtone.

Now Playing also has a built-in equalizer, a couple home screen widget options, and lock screen controls.

What it doesn’t have is support for landscape orientation, which makes it a bit awkward to use on tablets. But the developer is working on landscape mode.

Also, like most third party music apps, it can only access music stored on your device, not tracks uploaded to your Google Music account.
